Psychiatric nurse practitioner, PMHNP-bc

Adam Popp

Adam enjoys working with all individuals 18 years and older. His process involves getting to know the patient in an effort for immediate symptom relief and to explore longer-term what might be the primary etiology of any suffering. While he is a prescriber, each clinical interaction is a therapeutic interaction, and he integrates elements of humanistic and ACT therapies and mindfulness approaches whenever appropriate.

A message from Adam

Joining the mental healthcare field as a second career after a first career in film and television, I realized that what motivates me most is in working with individuals from all walks of life to achieve wellness. Informed by the nursing model of care, I believe in an evidence-based, patient-centered approach from a perspective of healing that extends beyond medication management. Mindfulness practices and holistically-oriented care have become a guiding principle for me that considers all aspects of one’s life in providing care. Times of suffering can be part of a wider range of human experience that leads to a broader understanding of one’s self and an opportunity to move toward one’s goals and life values. As Joseph Campbell wrote, “Where you stumble, there lies your treasure.”

  • Coming to this profession as a second career, I take a holistic approach toward treatment that considers all aspects of one's life – biological, psychological, and social – into account when developing a treatment plan. Working in a creative field has allowed me to realize that connecting with others is a through-line between artistic creation and the creativity that happens in the clinical space. Creativity is, to me, a desire to connect and share with others and that’s exactly what therapy and psychological healing can be. We are all in this together and affirming the presence of unconditional support in the therapeutic space drives my approach.
