Identify and understand personality disorders
Personality disorders belong to a large category of mental health issues that affect the very core of our selfhood—the way we see ourselves and how we present ourselves to the world. Some mild personality disorders evidence themselves as minor eccentricities or oddities, while more serious personality disorders include narcissism, paranoia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and social inhibition. These disorders have complex origins and may be rooted in trauma, genetics, or both. Individuals with personality disorders may benefit from psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of treatments. At Acheron, our experts help get to the core of multiple issues that may be contributing to a personality disorder to help individuals attain peace and wellbeing in their lives.

Frequently Asked Questions
what to know about personality disorders
What are the signs of a personality disorder?
The symptoms of a personality disorder are different depending on what kind of disorder it is. In general, however, a person with a personality disorder may experience:
- Emotional dysregulation
- Behaviors that cause repeated conflict or distress
- Difficulty understanding others’ perspectives
- Impulsive or self-destructive behaviors
- Difficulty forming or maintaining relationships
- Rigid or inflexible thinking patterns
- Unstable self-image or sense of identity
- Difficulty in tolerating change or managing stress
What are the different types of personality disorders?
Personality disorders can be generally grouped into three clusters, although some people have characteristics of more than one cluster.
Cluster A is characterized by eccentric behavior, and people with this type of personality disorder may be distrustful and prefer to avoid others. They may seem “odd” and tend to have difficulty with friendship and other close relationships.
Cluster B is characterized by dramatic or erratic behavior and often involves intense mood swings, a strong need for attention, and unstable relationships. This cluster includes borderline personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, and antisocial personality disorder.
Cluster C is characterized by anxious or fearful behavior; the fear of rejection can manifest itself as a need for control or strong sensitivity to criticism. This cluster includes avoidant personality disorder, dependent personality disorder, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.
Personality disorders exist on a spectrum and may be mild or severe. A diagnosis requires evaluation by a trained mental health professional.
Can therapy help with a personality disorder?
Depending on the severity of the condition, therapy for a personality disorder may be a long-term process. Progress is gradual, but therapy can help. Look for a therapist with experience treating personality disorders and who uses evidence-based techniques. You may need to try more than one therapist before you find the right fit.
A therapist may use any one of these treatment strategies, or a combination:
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is good for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and relationships
- Schema Therapy addresses long-standing patterns and unmet emotional needs
- Psychodynamic Therapy helps with understanding relationship patterns and inner conflicts
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) involves changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviors
- Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) is based on improving understanding of emotions and intentions
